About QuadDay.com...
QuadDay.com came about due to the number of people who told me that they'd have stopped by and visited the Champaign-Urbana Indepdendent-Music Association on Quad Day if they'd known anything about what they do, including the fact that they are the biggest contributors to my website, OpeningBands.com. Originally, the idea was to have not a list of RSO's on this site with descriptions, as well as a map, so that people could plan their Quad Day visit to the CIA and other organizations booths accordingly. Unfortunately, the Map is not going to happen, and herein lies the QuadDay.com Disclaimer slash we're only here to help and not step on any toes schpiel (tm): The Registered Organizations Office at UIUC responded to my request for such information with a point that, while reasonable, I disagree with. They would not provide the necessary information to create a map before quad day. The reasoning behind this is as follows: "One of the philosophical intentions of Quad Day is to promote the casual browsing throughout the day by students." This is reasonable - and I understand that casual browsing can help some organizations get visitors who may not have made a special point to check them out. However, the mass quantity of people who'd have checked out the CIA and other organizations had they known anything about them beforehand is staggering. Furthermore, I feel that the fact that there are literally hundreds of booths to visit, crowded by thousands of students, makes it impossible to get through Quad Day without several booths catching your eye. The reasoning would be more sound if Quad Day happened more than once a year, and wasn't such an important starting point in students' involvement with extracurricular organizations and activities. Please let it be known that I hold UIUC (my Alma Mater) and the RO Office staff in the highest regard. I just respectfully disagree on the philosophy of "open meandering", and therefore want to provide a useful, year-round resource for U of I registered student organizations to promote themselves both before and after Quad Day. On this site, you'll find a place to list your organization, indicate that you're a member of various organizations, set up event and meeting calendars, email reminders, forums, and more. Suggestions are always welcome and can be sent to me at steve@quadday.com. |
